Briskmail Privacy & security
Know where your mail goes.
Your messages come from Gmail to Briskmail on your Mac. This page explains the local copy, the new-mail signal, and the controls that are easy to miss.
The local copy is encrypted.
Briskmail keeps a bounded copy of message bodies so recent mail opens quickly. Cached content is encrypted with a separate key for each account, held in the macOS Keychain. The local search index is rebuilt in memory rather than stored as readable search terms on disk.
on your Mac
- You choose the windowSettings → Storage lets you choose how much mail to keep locally and shows the space used by each account.
- Attachments are fetched when neededThe background mail copy keeps message bodies; attachments download when you open them.
- Clear or sign outClear Cache removes the local mail copy. Signing out removes the account's token and cached data.
Three permissions, three jobs.
Google asks you to approve the access Briskmail needs. The app does not ask for access to other Google products.
- gmail.modifyRead, organize, draft, and send mail when you ask the app to do so.
- gmail.settings.basicList, create, and delete Gmail filters from inside Briskmail.
- pubsubReceive a change marker for new mail. The marker has no message content; the app fetches the mail from Gmail afterward.
A couple of choices stay with you.
Message HTML runs with page JavaScript disabled, and a file link in a message cannot open a local file. Remote images are a separate privacy choice because Briskmail does not put an image proxy between you and the sender.
- Remote imagesThey load by default, as in Gmail. Settings → Privacy lets you change that to known senders or Ask. Loading an image can reveal your IP address and that the mail was opened.
- SendingComposing or replying saves a draft. Mail leaves only after an explicit Send click.
- Full legal detailsThe privacy policy covers purchases, retention, deletion, and Google's Limited Use requirements.
